Our 2023 Chorus Competition Judges!

Vinroy Brown (Westminster/Capital Singers)

  1. What do you teach and where do you perform? I teach sacred music (sacred=music usually performed in church) at Westminster Choir College. I perform in local churches and other performing venues in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York. 
  2. Where are you from? What do people call you/nickname? I am from North Brunswick :). Nicknames: Vinny (friends), Tori (family- long story!)
  3. What’s your favorite music/song? I love anything by Nina Simone! I think she is a genius! 
  4. What’s your favorite game?UNO! My college friends and I can play it all night! And it’s always fun!
  5. What’s your favorite food? Chinese food for the win 🙂 
  6. What fruit or vegetable describes you? Broccoli. I am broccoli 🙂 

Rachel Clark (NBMS)  

  1. Where do you teach and perform?I teach at North Brunswick Township Middle School, teaching 7/8th grade chorus and a music class for our special learners. I sing in multiple community choirs around NJ, including Vocala Ensemble and Harmonium Choral Society, and have a church choir job in Summit, NJ
  2. Where are you from? Name/Nickname? I am from NJ! I went to Morris Knolls High School in Denville, NJ, I hour N of NB. I’ve always just been called Rachel- but sometimes Clark because there were a lot of Rachel’s in my graduating class!
  3. Favorite music/song? I love whatever song I am currently teaching my students, and I love to listen to popular radio music from my childhood.
  4. Favorite Game? I love word games and card games, especially Dutch Blitz
  5. Favorite Food? Pasta! I am going to Italy this summer and can’t wait for pasta 
  6. What fruit or vegetable describes you? Beets! (I’m a musician, get it?!)

Allyssa Jurgens (Linwood)

  1. I teach at Linwood and I sing/play piano for my church in Allentown, NJ. 
  2. I’m from a tiny town called Allentown, NJ. My friends call me Ally and my students call me Ms. Dragon.
  3. I love ALL music, but lately I’ve been listening to a lot of Leon Bridges, Tems, and Coldplay.
  4. My favorite game is Uno because I always win!!
  5. My favorite food is dino chicken nuggets.
  6. I can be best described by a pineapple!

Charity Wicks (Summit/Broadway/Professor)

  1. What do you teach and where do you perform? – I teach at William Paterson University, music direct at Central Presbyterian Church in Summit, and also perform on Broadway!
  2. Where are you from? What do people call you/nickname? I am from a farm in northern Minnesota. I don’t really have a nickname, so Charity it is!
  3. What’s your favorite music/song? Oooh, that’s tough. I love most music!! I love classical, I love reggae, I love classic rock, I love 90s hip hop, and my son and I have been loving Miley Cyrus’s “Flowers” lately!
  4. What’s your favorite game? I love all card games!
  5.  What’s your favorite food? Korean bi-bim-bop!
  6. What fruit or vegetable describes you? Hahaha, this is fun! A tomato. Solid & reliable, yet often unexpected.

Paul Rajah (Cathedral choir)

  1. What do you teach and where do you perform? I am the music director and organist at  Holy Name of Jesus in East Orange NJ. My weekday job is being a Learning Technology Manager at UPS. I teach adults how our brains learn new things and also using new technology to help us continue to learn as adults.
  2. Where are you from? What do people call you/nickname? I am born and raised in Jersey City. Pauly 
  3. What’s your favorite music/song? I love lyrical music especially theatre and choral music. 
  4. What’s your favorite game? Chess
  5. What’s your favorite food? Everything. I LOVE FOOD
  6. What fruit or vegetable describes you?  Carrot. I like to be hidden /underground. Work/grow and provide something that is beautiful

Marion Gayles (Cathedral choir)

  1. What do you teach and where do you perform? I teach piano and am a professional singer of classical music. 
  2. Where are you from? What do people call you/nickname? I’m from the great state of New Jersey.  I’ve been called: Marion, Mar, Maryanne, Miriam, Marilyn, Marine, Gail, Gayle and Katisha (urban pronunciation)
  3. What’s your favorite game? At this moment, Gin Rummy.
  4. Fave music/song: Night and Day, Cole Porter
  5. Fave food? Pizza with sausage, peppers and onion
  6. What fruit or vegetable describes you? A peach🫢
